According to tradition the Lord of Verona,
Cangrande della Scala, assigned the Montecchi
and Capuleti families the task of managing the strongholds of Montecchio, in an attempt to
reconcile the feuding families by entrusting them
both with the responsibility of defending the territory.
It was a vain effort to unite the families which however gave rise to the thwarted love of the two young lovers which eventually came to a tragic end in the city of Verona.
The story was told for the first time in 1524 by Luigi Da Porto from Vicenza and by the end of the century it had inspired the genius of William Shakespeare.
The story of Romeo and Juliet, as told by Shakespeare in his brilliant play, was lifted to the highest level of poetry and has consequently become a worldwide symbol of love that challenges eternity.
